The Sandman Netflix series (Season 1)

It sounds as though Sandman is going down a treat... But .. I'm still reluctant to watch it, as I'm agonizing over whether to try and read the comics first. Help?

Bad dreams? The comic definitely has some EC horrorgore moments in it.

Other than that, it all depends how much DC lore you want to get into. The Sandman comic refers to events in other DC/Vertigo giants such as Hellblazer and Saga of the Swamp Thing, and then there's characters such as Cain and Abel, who were in their own House of Mystery and House of Secrets books, and so on. The Netflix show glosses over or changes the lore to make it more palatable to non-comic book readers (I guess you can call them comic book historians at this point - - Edit: I meant NON-comic book arrggh whatever).

Example from E02: Imperfect Hosts -- it appears that the Corinthian is being used as the antagonist/expediter for keeping the story moving while he has a lesser role in the comics. Plus, it seems that John Constantine won't appear in the series, but his ancestor Joanna Constantine will expand her role and fill in Keanu Reeves' cameo time (no giant lighter or edgelord forearm tattoos! this is a tragedy of epic proportions ).

I think you'd be fine watching the Netflix series and then deep-diving into the comics if you want more.

I am much more sensitive to bad dreams these days than two decades ago. I re-read Preludes & Nocturnes and Doll's House a week before the series came out. No bad dreams, but read early in the day and lots of unrelated things afterward. The Netflix series softens some of the harder horror aspects, with 24/7 being the most disturbing issue in the comics and less of the action on camera.
