What are we watching?

Want to talk about some nifty piece of media that isn't Neil-related? This is the place to do it.

Watched it last night! It’s silly and ridiculous and I loved it.

Finished Loki. I loved it, but I know nothing of the comics. Not nearly enough Owen Wilson though.

Marvel really grooves to emotional trauma soap opera though.

HBO Max. The Man with the Iron Fists. Fist? Fists?

Terrible. Everything that makes you cringe in a Quentin Tarantino movie (which he produced but didn't direct) is grindhoused here, but you know how some movies are so bad they're good? This isn't one of them. :?

Ex: Hero gets his arms chopped off at the biceps. Later in the movie he smiths himself bionic gauntlets (because they had that technology in 19th century China) and his arms somehow grow elbows and forearm stumps to fit into the gauntlets. That's some powerful frickin' chi there. Dave Bautista plays a steampunk X-man Colossus and there's some other big stars showing up that apparently lost a bet.

Now you're going to go watch it because of the Colossus thing. Don't say I didn't warn you.

I've paused Babylon 5 for a minute to instead re-watch The Wire, which has been some 11 years since my last watch.

I can’t settle on anything to watch. I’ve read a lot of books lately though.

Only things I’m really watching are The Bad Batch and Wellington Paranormal, and I really don’t like the wait-a-week thing.

The Green Knight
Rating of Fury: B-

A good film, but not a great film. See what I did there? Using the theme of the movie to snark on itself? That is subtle comedy.

As a horror movie, The Green Knight is the typical slow-boil-with-a-weak-payoff snoozefest that A24 likes making. Did you find Midsommar scary? (You're a big chicken if you did, but) then GK is your type of spookiness.

But as a retelling of a thousand year old poem/fable that tests a man to rise above his unethical self? It's a good story. The film is multilayered with the trials of Gawain and all these slightly-mentioned subplots that keep The Game into play (was the knight ever in danger at all?) but WEW The Green Knight takes the long way around the barn and turns its fantasy world into a depressing sludge. What worsens this is that Gawain is a prick, and watching him repeatedly fail makes him unlikable and stretches a long movie even longer. If you see this in the theaters don't be surprised when you see random cell phones constantly flickering on and off.

If you liked The VVitch (I didn't), you'll like The Green Knight. This is a thinking person's horror/fantasy film that gets points for cleverness, but it's also a tad pretentious and boring. And not scary.

I'm really looking forward to The Green Knight whenever it hits streaming. Looks right up my alley.

GK was a tough review for me. The movie's decent, but if I didn't address the elephant in the room I'd be lying to you and myself. If GK was more like The Lighthouse and had DaFoe v. Patterson scenery-chewing slugfests throughout, it'd be easy to give GK an A, but Gawain doesn't have an actual antagonist to play against (the Green Knight goes 'boo' in the beginning of the movie and maybe has 5 minutes of screentime at the end) because he is his own villian, proven again and again by Gawain choosing to take the path of the great man instead of a good man.

There's one scene where Gawain stumbles upon an oddly modern mansion and after a meet and greet the lord if the house asks Gawain why he wants to be a knight. Gawain waffles the question as we would waffle a why-do-you-want-this-job interview question for a dreary middle management position - - he wants the follow the easiest path for money and power but refuses to say it. Instead of Willem DaFoe smacking Gawain in the back of the head and taunting him we get a demigod going 'hmf' and more awkwardness from everyone.

Something else; if you're watching GK from home there'sno shame in turning on the subtitles. At many points (in a surround sound theater) the accents were so thick and the whisperings so soft I missed dialouge even though I got the actor's intent (king being kingly, sorceress warning, spoopy ghost, etc). I'll be streaming the movie from home just to catch what I missed.

An antagonist which is his own self and choices? Yup, sounds like my cup of tea. I'll cross my fingers its out this fall on streaming.

Furi is busy trying to lace his sneakers 'the right way' so his imaginary precocious son Scoot will be doing today's review. In fact he will be reviewing two films at the same time.

Movies: Black Widow, The Suicide Squad
Rating of Scoot: POOP

It was another sequel to the capesh-, uh superhuman movie franchise that maybe kinda sorta added to the big hoobeldygoo but on it's own was POOP. Antihero white girl that's cuckoo for cocoa puffs and has no real superpowers gets a dysfunctional family. Macho male figures are portrayed as dum-dums. Antihero white girl gets punched in the face yet keeps her perfect nose. Movie touches on the victimization of normies in the real world but blames it on a big bad instead of gubberments. Stuff blows up and lots of people die but that's okay since its in a third world country and is le edgelord funny. Not enough boobies. NOT. ENOUGH. BOOBIES!

Movie's kinda watchable in parts but heckin' DRAGS when there's no character banter going on. If you can watch this POOP for free go do it but if youre cheap like my daddy dont go paying for it. :D  :D  :D

EDIT: This post has been up for three days and no one has corrected me that I misspelled Black Widow as Black Window. My phoneposting stinks but you guys are slipping. 😜
